Be Careful When Buying a Kindle as a Gift

imageKindle’s are great.  I think they’re so great that I bought one for a very good friend of mine who I knew loved to read.  She got her Kindle and was tickled pink.  Then she turned it on and saw MY NAME on it.

When you buy a Kindle through Amazon, since they know who you are, to save you “hassle” they set your Kindle up with your account information ready and waiting to buy books.  So my friend was all set to buy as many books as she like on MY account without ever having to enter a password or anything.

I went back and saw that there is a small check box that says “this is a gift” and as I later found out, if you DON’T check the box they assume it’s for you and set it up with your account.

Kindle’s are great and make great gifts for your friends who are readers.  If you buy one through Amazon, LOOK for that little check box during checkout and be sure to check it.  Then the recipient can set up their own account with Amazon.

A Reminder for Free Android Apps

imageThis is just a reminder that Amazon has a free app everyday (that you normally would have to pay for.)  I’ve downloaded apps that cost as much as $5.00 for free just by checking out Amazon’s site each day.  So if you have an Android-based phone or tablet be sure to check it out:

5GB of Free File Storage with Amazon

Updated 3/30:  In addition to the 5GB of storage, any songs you purchase through Amazon can be stored in your Cloud Drive for FREE.  Meaning none of your Amazon purchased music will count against your 5GB.  Go ahead, buy all the music you want.  You’ll have it backed up for free in your Cloud Drive and you can download it as often as you like and use it wherever you wish.

3/29:  imageAmazon is offering 5 Gigabytes of free storage with no strings attached.  Most of you probably already have an Amazon account, if you don’t go set one up.  It’s real simple to use, no download necessary, just sign up and using their web interface you choose the files you want to upload and what folder to upload to (documents, photos, music, etc.) and bam, you’re done.

Now, you need to know that this is NOT secure storage, so don’t upload the file that contains all your passwords, or those photos of your naked girlfriend while your wife was out of town (ok – to be fair, or your naked boyfriend while your husband was out of town.)  But maybe those FAMILY photos you treasure so much, or certainly those important term papers you’re working on at the end of each semester.

5GB is quite a bit of space, so especially if you have NO backup system (and shame on you if you don’t) at least put some of your data here for the eventual rainy day.  Of course, if you NEED more space Amazon will be more than happy to sell it to you, but if that’s the case then just contact me and get Carbonite with UNLIMITED storage for $55 a year AND it will be completely secure.

You Might Need to Change Your Amazon Password

imageA flaw in Amazon’s security may make it easy for someone to hack your Amazon account.  If “password” is in any part of your account password (like password1234), a hacker using just “password” might be able to get into your account.  Even if your password isn’t something like “password” but is weak or the same password you use everywhere else, changing it is a good idea.  Read my article on Secure Passwords for information on what constitutes a good password.

Deal: QuickBooks Pro 2011 for $136

imageAmazon has QuickBooks Pro 2011 for only $136.  It normally sells for over $200 and if you’re lucky you can sometimes find it on sale for around $180.  If you use QuickBooks and are thinking about or needing to update, here’s the deal for you.

Ready to Upgrade? Get a New Smartphone Free!

imageHave you been using that same old cell phone for years and lately have been looking at all those iPhones, Droids (and other Androids phones) out there and have been tempted, yet at the same time find yourself a little intimidated?  Let me introduce you to the new Windows Phone 7.  The Windows phone is a totally different phone from the old Windows phones and quite different that the iPhone and Android phones.  It has a very user friendly interface that you will quickly understand.  I won’t go into a lot of detail here, but if you’re thinking about getting a phone that will not only make phone calls, but also let you send and receive text messages, check your email, go onto the Internet, listen to your music, watch a video or just check in with Facebook, keep reading.

An iPhone will cost you $200 up front and frankly has a nasty habit of dropping phone calls, an Android phone (my personal favorite) can be a little daunting for someone who doesn’t want to have to tinker with their phone.

The great news is that right now for approx. another 10 days Amazon has the BEST Window phone, the Samsung Focus for only 1 cent (ok, 1 cent isn’t free, but they do ship it to you for free.)  Of course you have to sell your soul to AT&T for 2 years, but at least you’ll have a nice phone.  Below is a link to a 3-minutes overview of Windows Phone 7.  Take a peek at it and if you like it, go to an AT&T store to see how you like the Samsung Focus.  If you like it, go home and click on this link to Amazon to get the phone:

Now You Can Give E-Books as a Gift

imageAmazon is now allowing you to give Kindle e-books as gifts.  So if you know someone with a Kindle (or the Kindle app on their phone/iPad) or know someone who is getting one for Christmas, now you can give a book to go along with it.  If they would like to return the book, they get exchange it for an Amazon gift certificate and use it for another book if they wish.  Many top sellers like John Grisham’s “The Confession” can be purchased for $9.99.  Here’s the link to Amazon’s page:

E-Book Readers: Kindle vs. Nook

If you’re a reader, then you’ve probably been intrigued by the e-book readers like Amazon’s Kindle and the Barnes and Noble Nook.  Maybe you’ve got a reader in your family, here’s a gift to think about.  PC Magazine has done a side-by-side comparison of the various e-book readers including features, dimensions and price.  You’ll find it here:

Is There a Kindle in Your Christmas Future?

The problem with buying a Kindle up to now is that if you wanted to check it out before buying, you had to find someone who owned one, because the only way to buy one was online through Amazon.  I guess Amazon has figured out they will sell more if people can actually TOUCH one before buying, so this fall Best Buy, Target and Staples will start selling the Kindle.  With other e-readers already in the market and the iPad and soon to be plethora of Android tablets, I wouldn’t be surprised to see great prices this holiday season.

DEAL: $50 Laser Printer – Free Shipping

Amazon has the Samsung ML-1655 for $50 and includes free shipping.  If you’re in the market for inexpensive, fast and hi-resolution black and white printer, this is a good one.
