5GB of Free File Storage with Amazon

Updated 3/30:  In addition to the 5GB of storage, any songs you purchase through Amazon can be stored in your Cloud Drive for FREE.  Meaning none of your Amazon purchased music will count against your 5GB.  Go ahead, buy all the music you want.  You’ll have it backed up for free in your Cloud Drive and you can download it as often as you like and use it wherever you wish.

3/29:  imageAmazon is offering 5 Gigabytes of free storage with no strings attached.  Most of you probably already have an Amazon account, if you don’t go set one up.  It’s real simple to use, no download necessary, just sign up and using their web interface you choose the files you want to upload and what folder to upload to (documents, photos, music, etc.) and bam, you’re done.

Now, you need to know that this is NOT secure storage, so don’t upload the file that contains all your passwords, or those photos of your naked girlfriend while your wife was out of town (ok – to be fair, or your naked boyfriend while your husband was out of town.)  But maybe those FAMILY photos you treasure so much, or certainly those important term papers you’re working on at the end of each semester.

5GB is quite a bit of space, so especially if you have NO backup system (and shame on you if you don’t) at least put some of your data here for the eventual rainy day.  Of course, if you NEED more space Amazon will be more than happy to sell it to you, but if that’s the case then just contact me and get Carbonite with UNLIMITED storage for $55 a year AND it will be completely secure.

Can’t Make the Funeral? Watch it on the Web

I’m not even sure what to make of this, but I guess it’s the way of the future and I suppose a convenience if you absolutely can’t attend.  More and more funeral homes are offering to broadcast the wedding over the web. USA Today has more info on this latest service in the funeral industry:

New Android App Store at Amazon, Get a Free App Every Day

imageNow in addition to the Android Marketplace (and other various 3rd party locations) Android phone users now can go to Amazon for apps.  In addition, Amazon is giving away a paid app for free each and every day.  Right now it appears most of the apps are the same ones you’ll find in the Marketplace, but of course the free apps are what will keep you coming back.

To get the Amazon Appstore on your Android phone, go to this link on your computer or just point your phone’s barcode scanner at the QR code below.  Enter your phone’s number and a text message with a link will be sent to your phone.  Click on it and the Appstore will download onto your phone.  In addition to the free daily app, Amazon is also giving Angry Birds Rio for free (for a limited time I imagine.)  So get out your Droid, Evo, Incredible or other Android phone and add the Amazon Appstore to your phone.

Switch/Upgrade to a Verizon Android Phone For Free

imageThrough the end of the month, you can get a Droid X on Verizon for free (in cell phone carrier terms free means a new 2-year contract of course) through Dell.  The Droid X has a big 4.3” screen that is easy to read.  They also have the Droid 2 with a slide-out keyboard, but the screen is smaller and I just don’t like it as much.)  Another phone being offered free is the HTC Incredible.  I think HTC makes the best Android phones because of their “Sense” interface.  The Incredible has a 3.7” screen, so it’s not as big as the Droid X, but it has an excellent camera if you like to take pictures with your phone.

With all the talk about “4G” phones, AT&T buying T-Mobile and the occasional blurb about 3-D phones (really?  do you want a 3-D phone?) now is an excellent time to get a deal on an excellent smartphone.  If you’re waiting for the next big thing, stop.  There will ALWAYS be “the next big thing” in phones for probably the next 5 years.  We now have phones on the market as good as (or in some cases better than) the iPhone, so don’t delay if you’re thinking about it.

Here’s the link to the Dell site (the deals here are BETTER than directly through the carriers):

Switch from Android to iPhone, or iPhone to Android

imagePCMag has a couple of articles to deal with the frustrations you may be feeling as either an iPhone user or an Android phone user (gee, if only someone would create the perfect phone on the perfect carrier life would be good.)  Many iPhone users HATE all the dropped calls.  Many Android phone users HATE the complexity or choices to be made.

There are good reasons to use both types of phones.  Follow the links below to read about making the switch and hoping for greener grass on the other side of the tracks.

Dropbox is Free – So Go Get It!

imageIf for no other reason, Dropbox gives you 2 Gigabytes of free storage on the web.  But the GREAT thing about Dropbox is that you can easily share the files in your Dropbox with any other computer that also uses your Dropbox login – like between your main computer at home and your laptop.  Dropbox installs as a folder into your documents folder.  Any file you place into the Dropbox will automatically copy the file to the web and to the other computer(s) in the same Dropbox account.  This is especially great if you need to get a big file from one computer to another – it could be an associate in another part of town or a family member across the country.  Email tends not to like files larger that 10 Megabytes, with Dropbox you get 2 Gigabytes for free.  The really great thing is that you can create folders within your Dropbox and just share that with a single person (or multiple persons) and yet keep the rest of your Dropbox private.

Do you have an important project you’re working on?  Keep it in your Dropbox (that way you’re sure you have a backup.)  Working on that school paper?  Keep it in your Dropbox.  You can also access the files in your Dropbox from any computer by logging in via the web, so you’ve always got your most important files close at any time.  Click on this link to get your free account – I love Dropbox!  Oh and there also is a version for your Android phone and the iPhone.

Security Flaw in Adobe Reader and Flash

imageAdobe is publishing today patches for its Acrobat Reader and Flash programs that fix security flaws that could allow someone to put malware onto your computer.  So when you see the little notices in the corner of your computer that you have updates to install… DO IT!!!

Have a nice day.  Smile

DEAL–Basic Dell Desktop for $199–$209

This IS a deal as long as you understand the limitations.  This computer is best used for email and browsing the Internet.  The limiting factor is the Celeron processor.  It runs at 2.2GHz but it will run out of steam fast if you start throwing photo editing or huge monster spreadsheets.  It does have 2GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive and Windows 7.  These are from the Dell Outlet and may have some dings or scratches, but they come with a full 1-year warranty with in-home service from Dell.  Also included are a keyboard and mouse but NO monitor.  Add the coupon code LQ6T0QBKXG6N3W at checkout to get the $50 discount.

These come and go in a hurry, so don’t wait long if you’re interested:

DEAL Dell Desktop with 17inch Monitor for $329

imageThe 17” monitor may not sound exciting, but stick with me for a minute.  First, the computer is a Dell Vostro (their business line) with a dual core 3.2GHz Intel processor.  Not the latest but might fine.  It also has 2GB of memory and a fast 320GB hard drive.  It comes with a DVD ROM drive, but it does NOT burn CD’s or DVD’s.  If you want a burner, Dell wants $35 for you to upgrade to a burner.  For half that you can buy one yourself from and install it.

OK, about the monitor, the only upgrade I would recommend in the $12 (yes, twelve dollar) upgrade to the DVI adapter.  This will allow you to connect TWO monitors to your computer.  You can have email up all the time in one monitor (or Facebook or Twitter or whatever you like) in the small monitor and your working space in the larger monitor.  You’ll love it once you try it.  If you’re considering upgrading your really old desktop – here’s a really great deal.  This link will take you to the Dell site:

A New Name Coming to the Internet…

imageThe porn industry now has its own corner of the Internet’s street to work.  You’re familiar with .com, .org, .gov and lot’s of other top-level domains, well now there is .xxx to add.  That’s right boys and girls, the Internet has its very own red light district.

The good news is that porn providers using .xxx make it easy to block, since you can easily block all .xxx sites within your home.  The bad news is that the porn providers know this and may be reluctant to relocate and move to the new domain.  There is no requirement that porn sites use the .xxx domain, it just becomes optional.  So it makes porn easier to find for those looking for it, and really not much harder to prevent for those trying to avoid it.

Find Out When Paid iPhone and iPad Apps Are FREE

imageMonster Free Apps is an app (and yes, it’s free) that watches for apps that you normally would have to pay for are being offered for free in the iTunes store.  So if you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch you can get a notification of apps that for a limited time (sometime just for the day) are free.  It will even tell you at the end of the month how much money you’ve save with the free apps.

Tek-Chic Systems really likes free, so head out to the iTunes store and add this app to your device.

HTC Thunderbolt Coming to Verizon Thursday

imageWell, probably Thursday.  There have been delays but it looks like the Thunderbolt is finally going to be available.  This phone is similar to HTC’s EVO 4G on Sprint, but this will run on Verizon’s 4G network.  It has a big 4.3” screen and the HTC Sense interface (my favorite among the Android phones.)  Wirefly has posted a 2-part video review of the phone on YouTube.  Sometimes Wirefly has a better price than Verizon, so check out on the 17th to see if they beat whatever deal Verizon may offer.  Here’s the link to the reviews:

Deal – HP 23” monitor $180 at Staples

imageMy clients know I’m not a big fan of HP computers and printers, but I do like (and own 2) HP monitors.  Staples has this HP 23” monitor for only $180 (Amazon sells it for $207.)  This is a new generation monitor, lighter than previous models, and most importantly LED backlit that makes it more efficient and long lasting.  It has an anti-glare screen so it’s perfect if you’re in a bright room or have either lights or a windows behind you.  It has DVI (digital), VGA (analog) and HDMI inputs, so you can connect it to pretty much anything.  Here’s the link to the Staples site:

DEAL: Dell Optiplex Desktop $343

imageHere’s a good deal on a Dell Optiplex desktop system.  The base price for this PC on sale is $325.  When you click on the link it takes you through the customization screens.  Add Windows 7 Professional (a NICE upgrade) for free and later upgrade to 4GB of memory for free.  I recommend you spend $8 to upgrade the hard drive to a 320GB drive and $10 for the DVD burner.  This will be a nice system when you’re done.  If you want to play around with video editing, HUGE spreadsheets or Photoshop you might want to spend an extra $65 and upgrade to the Core2 Duo processor.  Here’s the deal:

Install This Fix on Your Windows Machine Today

imageThere is an unpatched vulnerability in Windows having to do with Internet Explorer that is being exploited.  Even if you don’t use Internet Explorer as your browser, you still need to install the patch.  Follow the link to Microsoft site and click on the “Fix it” button on the left to enable the fix.  It will download a patch you need to run – this will help keep your safe from the bad guys.  The patch disables a feature you will never use, but the bad guys will.  Here’s the link to Microsoft’s fix:
