Are Your Updates Installed (did you know they were even delivered?)
Yesterday was the 2nd Tuesday of the month – so Microsoft pushed their updates for Windows out to you. If you don’t know, you might see an icon in your task tray just waiting for you to click on it – but to be sure you can click on your start button, click on “Programs” and up toward the top you should see “Windows Update”. Click on it and see if there are any updates you need to install on your computer. If you leave your computer on 24/7 and auto-update is turned on then your computer is probably already up to date. But if your computer is off then you may not have yet received the updates – so go check and if you need them don’t wait! Download and install them.
In addition to Microsoft’s updates, Adobe has recently updated it’s Flash player and Oracle has updated Java, so be on the lookout for those icons as well.
Can You Spot the Fake? You Better!
The folks at OpenDNS put together a great little quiz to see if you can tell if 14 web pages are fakes or the real thing. It’s simple – just look at the page and click either Phish (for fake) or Real. You need to know how to spot phishing sites because they want login information to your email, social networking and financial web sites. I get a gold star for getting 14 out of 14 right the very first time. Take the test and let me know how you did: http://goo.gl/0lUmT
ATT Wireless Ranks LAST in Customer Satisfaction
In 2010, Consumer Reports reported AT&T Wireless last in customer satisfaction among not only the four major carriers (ATT, Verizon, Spring and T-Mobile) but with very small regional carriers as well. Carriers like U.S. Cellular and Credo beat out AT&T as well. Wired.com has an article with all the details. Check it out here: http://goo.gl/FGS0Z
Buying an iPad 2 for Christmas? Hold On–You Just Might Want the Asus Transformer Prime
For starters, you have to admit (whether you know it or not) there CURRENTLY are a lot more apps available for the iPad than for Android-based tablets. That being said, Android is quickly catching up (after all, how may flashlight apps do you need?) Asus has announced that their Transformer Prime tablet will be available on December 19, just in time to get it before Christmas.
Why would you want one you ask? Well for starters, it will be the first quad-core tablet on the market (that means it will have four processors handling the tasks currently handled usually by one processor.) The Transformer series by Asus also has a keyboard that you can dock with making it much more like a netbook AND as a bonus has an additional battery giving you even more time to use your Transformer without having to plug in.
Engadget did a thorough review of the Transformer Primer – check it out here: http://goo.gl/wiPmw
Google Music is LIVE and FREE to Everyone!
Google announced today that Google Music is now live and open to everyone. Google Music lets you to upload up to 20,000 of your songs to their server for free. From there you can stream it to your phone or another computer anywhere.
Not a big deal you say, well you’re pretty much right. But then they up’d the ante by announcing that you can buy music at music.google.com, and they are the highest quality .mp3’s at 320Kbs. When you buy a song on Google music, it automatically gets added to your online storage and if you wish, you can “Share” it on Google+ and everyone in your circles can play the whole song once for free. They if they like it it’s easy to purchase – but they get to hear the WHOLE song first and not some little 30 second snippet.
And if you’re a musician, well they just may have put MySpace out of business because they are setting up a special area for independent artists where they can upload their own original work and make it available in Google Music just like the big boys and give them a lot of control over price, preview length and more. There is an interactive tour you can take at http://goo.gl/NupKT. Check out Google Music, a great way to have all your music with you wherever you are, and you can’t beat the price.
Apple is Recalling 1st Generation iPod Nanos
When the first iPod Nano was introduced – it was a hot item. Well, now it’s REALLY a hot item because some of the first generation models have developed a problem with the battery overheating and creating a safety hazard. Apple has decided to recall and replace the iPod Nanos that were manufactured between September 2005 and December 2006. If your Nano has a plastic black or white front and a silver metal back, that’s a first generation Nano. Apple has a page when you can enter your serial number and begin the replacement process. Apple will replace it with a new one (what isn’t known if that’s a new 1st generation or a current model.) If you do send yours in for replacement, BE SURE to back it up with iTunes before sending it, or you may lose everything that was on it. Check Your Facebook Security (Yes, AGAIN!)
Facebook is almost evil for how they are always mucking around with your security settings. I checked mine and what do you know? They had changed! Things that were once marked for Friends (or my eyes) only were now marked “Everyone”. So whether you’re reading this directly on my blog (tek-chic.com/blog), on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or Google+, go NOW to your Facebook page and click the down arrow in
the upper right corner and click on “Privacy Settings”. This will take you to a page (that has changed since I was last there) and go through each and every item to make sure it is STILL what your thought it was. I recommend you keep most things to your “Friends”. Making information about yourself to “Friends of Friends” or worse “Everyone” makes more information about you available to the world than you probably would like if we ran through it line by line.
Facebook makes its money by selling YOU, literally. Information about you is worth money and the more information about you they can sell, the happier they are. Take control of your personal privacy and check those settings now.
Hold the Phone! Unlimited EVERYTHING for $19/mo
I know, it’s hard to believe, but it IS possible to have a smartphone that gives you UNLIMITED calling, UNLIMITED text and UNLIMITED data for only $19 a month. How is this possible you ask? It’s leveraging the power of wi-fi. There is a new company called Republic Wireless that’s hoping to change how you feel about wireless companies. The usual cell phone carriers charge you so much because it it expensive to operate cell phone towers that can handle all the voice traffic, not to mention the ever increasing text and data traffic.
Well, Republic Wireless has turned everything around by leveraging the economy of wi-fi (which is already paid for) and using it in ALL cases before using the cell phone wireless network. Their thinking is since wi-fi is almost always faster than a 3G and in many cases even a 4G connection, why not use wi-fi to handle not only the text and data, but the actual phone calls as well.
I can’t speak to how well it works in practice, but it’s a novel idea and could easily save me $600 a year, so I’m certainly going to look into it further. Their web site is RepublicWireless.com, check it out here: http://goo.gl/BUPFg
Google’s Halloween Doodle
The Google Doodle is that design you see when you go to Google.com. For special occasions they create unique designs, and for Halloween the doodle is a high-speed video of people at Google carving out these huge pumpkins to create a live Google Doodle.
On YouTube there is a full video on the making of the Google Doodle video here: http://bit.ly/TekChic0419
Verizon is Selling Your Information to Marketers
If you’re a Verizon Wireless customer, you might want to opt-out of their program that lets marketers know where you’ve been, your gender, sites you’ve browsed on your phone, even what restaurants you seem to like – pretty much anything they can glean from your phone. PC World has an article detailing it including the link to Verizon’s Privacy Policy. I think it’s just a little ironic that the company that quietly changed their privacy policy to divulge more information about you starts its privacy policy with “Verizon is committed to protecting your privacy”. Though Verizon says it won’t provide personally identifiable information, seems to me they will be providing enough that it won’t be hard to figure out. Yep – Tablet Prices are Dropping!
A week ago I wrote about how Amazon’s announcement of their Android based 7” Kindle Fire tablet at $199 was driving down prices on tablets. Well, now Lenovo has announced that their new A1 tablet that is due November 1st is now available for pre-order at $199 – matching Amazon’s price.
The Lenovo A-1 is a 7” tablet that though not aimed at the high-end market, should have more than enough performance for the average user. Unlike the Amazon tablet, the Lenovo A-1 will have front and rear facing cameras, SD card reader slot, Bluetooth AND will have built-in GPS that works even if you don’t have a wi-fi connection (which means you can use this as a 7” GPS unit in your car.) It will have a 1GHz processor and the resolution will be 1024×600. Onboard storage is only 2GB, another $50 will get you 16GB.
It comes with Gingerbread, which is not the latest version of Android software for the tablet, and we don’t currently know if it will run Android’s next operating system “Ice Cream Sandwich” that is coming out in a few weeks. But none the less it’s a promising tablet and we’re finally seeing the prices for these devices get down to where it’s easier for most to have a tablet of their own.
If you want to order one now, here’s the link to Lenovo’s site: http://bit.ly/TekChic0412
Steve Jobs 1955-2011
If you read about the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th and 19th centuries, you’ll read about how steam-powered machines, all-metal machine tools and advancing production techniques marked a dramatic shift in the lives of people. When I was in school we learned about Eli Whitney, who invented the cotton gin and made possible the mass growing and harvesting of cotton, making it profitable as a crop and all that manufactured cotton can do for people.
Jump ahead two hundred years. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak release their first computer on April Fools Day in 1976 and Apple Computers was born. 35 years later Apple is one of if not THE biggest companies in America. At times they have more money in the bank earning interest than the United State of America’s government. The success of Apple Computer isn’t because they built computers. Thousands of computer companies have come and gone since the first Apple computer, some were mom and pop shops building and selling their own models, some were once large and well-know names that you might say “oh yeah, I remember them, what ever happened to them?” Apple is who they are today because of the vision on one man – Steve Jobs. There are things about how Apple does things that some people don’t like, things like how when in the Apple world it is VERY hard to get apps from sources outside the regular Apple source. Apple will argue it is for ensuring a consistent and secure customer experience, and it does that. Others will say it limits what people can do with the product they own. Regardless of what you might think, it’s hard to argue with Apple’s success, and THAT is directly related to the leadership of Steve Jobs.
We are fortunate to be living today in a time that will some day in history books be referred to as the computer (or digital) revolution, and no name will be referred to more as having a singular impact on how the average person created, learned or communicated in this new digital world than Steve Jobs. Bill Gates will be remembered perhaps as the one man who made the personal computer popular and affordable for most people, but even Microsoft’s success can in part be attributed to Apple. Would we even have Windows if Apple hadn’t built their Macintosh with the graphical user interface?
When you think about the innovation that has driven the digital revolution of our time, you have to attribute that to Steve Jobs. His vision and passion has made possible in computers, tablets and phones (and I don’t care WHO has built them) possible what was unthinkable even 15 years ago.
It’s a shame to lose someone so soon, but his imprint has been firmly left and hopefully we’ll continue to benefit from his vision for years to come. I was in high school when my parents got our first VCR, and I’ve been blessed to move from the days when a simple/basic calculation that could only add, subtract, multiply and divide cost $100 to today where you can own a phone that you can carry with you anywhere, plays games, tells you where you are on the planet and how you find your destination, takes pictures, watch movies, listen to music, and much more for the same price. And oh yeah, it does complex math as well.
Thank you Steve for making such a wonderful impact on all out lives.
Apple’s Big Announcement: The iPhone 4S
Today Apple announced their latest phone. First they talked about several items included in iOS 5 (the iPhone and iPad operating system that will be released October 12th) like sending cards from an app and improved camera app functionality. They also talked about iTunes “Match”, which for $25 a year lets you upload songs you’ve ripped and even downloaded illegally onto Apple’s iCloud servers, letting you stream your whole collation to any of your iOS devices. Then the iPod Nano with new faces like Mickey Mouse and the iPod touch with the ability to send text messages over wi-fi.
Finally they got around to what everyone was waiting for – the PHONE. The new phone will be called the iPhone 4S, NOT the iPhone 5. That means on the outside it will look like the original iPhone 4, it will have a faster processor for smoother screens and also features faster graphics, which they demonstrated playing advanced games on the iPhone. It will be capable of faster3G speeds (though technically NOT 4G it may get marketed by the carriers as 4G) and they redesigned the antennas so that you’ll have a better connection even if “you’re holding it wrong” (apparently Apple is still blaming the users for how they are holding the phone.) They say it has an improved 8MP camera. They spent a lot of time talking about the new voice command features, including setting alarms and reminders by voice.
The phone will be available on October 14, with pre-orders starting Oct. 7th. The 16GB model will be $199 with contract on AT&T, Verizon and now Sprint as well. The current (and soon to be old) iPhone 4 will be $99 and you will still be able to get the 3GS model now for free with contract.
“I Hate Windows – It Never Changes”. “I Hate Windows – They’re Changing Everything” What’s a Company to Do?
Windows 8 is beginning to peek out in versions you can’t even call “beta”, but that hasn’t stopped the criticism. The look of Microsoft Windows hasn’t changed dramatically in over 15 years, hence a lot of complaining. Now there are indications that the new Windows 8 won’t look like Windows 7, and guess what – people are complaining. So far it looks like Microsoft is actually going to give you a choice (try to get a “choice” from Apple.) There is the “Metro” interface that is tile based like that on Windows Phone 7, and then there is the Vista/7 interface that most in the last few years are familiar with. What to do – what to do?
Windows 8 is beginning to get out to the tech community like yours truly, but I’ll do my best to let you know what I think this means for the average user. I have clients who’ve had a hard time going from XP to Windows 7, so depending on the actual release of Windows 8 next year and your computing needs, moving to Windows 8 may or may not be a good idea.
I’ll keep you posted. Just keep checking back in – as always I’ll do my best no to waste your time.
A New Kindle for $79 and a New Kindle Color Tablet for $199 Announced by Amazon
Get ready for a great Christmas present. Amazon announced today 4 new Kindles including a color tablet that is likely to take a chuck of the market from Apple’s iPad. Gone are the little round buttons, the $99 and $149 Kindles are touch based, the price difference is that $50 extra gets you a 3G connection so you can connect anywhere, $99 is wi-fi only. The $79 Kindle lacks “touch” and uses a simple directional pad – perfect if you would like to do your book shopping on your computer, then just let it download (over wi-fi) to your reader.
The BIG news was the expected announcement of the Amazon tablet that is being called the Kindle Fire. OK, it’s not a great name, but at $199 it’s nearly $350 cheaper than an iPad. And although admittedly it’s NOT an iPad, it comes with enough capability and features (like unlimited storage of your music and videos on Amazon’s Cloud service) that the price is likely to see a lot them fly out the door. It weighs less than a pound (14.6 ounces) so it will be easy to hold even in one hand. The Kindle Fire runs a rather locked down version of Google’s Android operating system, but you still have access to Amazon’s app store, and I’m sure it won’t take long before someone figures out how to “root” the tablet so you can access the Android Marketplace and install other apps not in Amazon’s app store. The Kindle Fire can be pre-ordered now and will be available November 15. The Kindle e-readers will be available November 21st.
