What’s Cheaper – An Ink Jet or Laser Printer???

imageThe best answer is probably BOTH!  Ink jets printers are great for printing high resolution photo quality  prints.  But I know that many of you have kids in school or own your own business and you print BLACK AND WHITE documents.  Maybe it’s a school paper, maybe it’s an invoice in your business – either way all you need is the information, you don’t need COLOR.

If you are looking to save money – then here is my recommendation: For color printing get an ink-jet printer.  My personal preferences are Canon and Epson, and my FIRST choice is Epson.   The Epson Workforce 630 is my favorite as of the time of this article, it’s wireless so you can place it anywhere in your home and it also scans, copies and faxes.  On sale you can find it as low between $80 and $90 – a real deal.

For plain black and white printing I recommend you get a laser printer.  The toner used by laser printers is MUCH cheaper than the black ink used by ink-jet printers.  A laser printer will pay for itself in a year.  Both Samsung and Brother have excellent laser printers in USB and wireless configurations.  You can get a USB laser printer for around $45 on sale, $80 for a wireless printer.

This is a great way to save money in the long run.  If you don’t need color – print to the laser printer.  If you must have color – print to the ink-jet printer.  You’ll save money in the long run.

When I see a great deal on printers, I’ll post them here.  So check back often.

A New Kindle for $79 and a New Kindle Color Tablet for $199 Announced by Amazon

imageGet ready for a great Christmas present.  Amazon announced today 4 new Kindles including a color tablet that is likely to take a chuck of the market from Apple’s iPad.  Gone are the little round buttons, the $99 and $149 Kindles are touch based, the price difference is that $50 extra gets you a 3G connection so you can connect anywhere, $99 is wi-fi only.  The $79 Kindle lacks “touch” and uses a simple directional pad – perfect if you would like to do your book shopping on your computer, then just let it download (over wi-fi) to your reader.

The BIG news was the expected announcement of the Amazon tablet that is being called the Kindle Fire.  OK, it’s not a great name, but at $199 it’s nearly $350 cheaper than an iPad.  And although admittedly it’s NOT an iPad, it comes with enough capability and features (like unlimited storage of your music and videos on Amazon’s Cloud service) that the price is likely to see a lot them fly out the door.  It weighs less than a pound (14.6 ounces) so it will be easy to hold even in one hand.  The Kindle Fire runs a rather locked down version of Google’s Android operating system, but you still have access to Amazon’s app store, and I’m sure it won’t take long before someone figures out how to “root” the tablet so you can access the Android Marketplace and install other apps not in Amazon’s app store.  The Kindle Fire can be pre-ordered now and will be available November 15.  The Kindle e-readers will be available November 21st.

Therapy Via the Internet – Is That the Future?

imageThe New York Times has an article about therapy and the use of the Internet to break down the barriers of distance.

I’m not going to talk about the possibilities – the Internet whether you like it or not is going to change how future generations interact not only with each other but with professionals.  Here’s the link to the article:    http://nyti.ms/TekChic0406

The New iPhone 5 Will Be Announced October 4th

imageNo, I’m not psychic, but the rumor mill has dug up some pretty convincing evidence that Apple’s CEO Tim Cooke will be presenting the new iPhone 5 during an event on October 4th.  The location of the event isn’t known yet, and the usual places in San Francisco are already booked by Oracle so right now the biggest secret seems to be WHERE the announcement will be made from.  It’s a safe assumption that the phone will be available a couple of weeks after that.  AT&T and Verizon will of course get them and there has been strong speculation that Sprint will also be getting the new phone as well, but if they treat Sprint like they treated Verizon they may make Sprint wait a few more months before getting it – we shall see.

As far as exactly WHAT the new phone will be like or even if it will be called the iPhone 5, no one knows for sure.  I’ll let you know as soon as I hear more.

Find the Nearest Bathroom With Your iPhone or Blackberry With Charmin’s “Sit or Squat” App

imageYes, that’s right – Charmin, the toilet paper you’re not supposed to squeeze wants you to tap on your phone to find the nearest public restroom.  You probably won’t need to use it when you’re home, but it can sure come in handy when you’re travelling or just not in your own neighborhood but “feel the need”.   You can also just go to their web site SitOrSquat.com on your pc or other smartphone to get the same results.  The restrooms get rated by other users, so you can have a better idea if the facilities are clean and for that matter, even open.  The app is available in the iTunes App Store and Blackberry App World.

Deal: Wireless Epson All-in-One w/ Duplex Printing

imageOffice Depot has the Epson Workforce 635 wireless printer on sale for $90.  This printer does a great job scanning, copying, faxing and of course printing.  Wireless is wonderful because you don’t have to connect it directly to any of your computers.  Instead you connect it either wired or wirelessly to your network, then all your computers can print to it from anywhere on the network.  The paper tray holds 250 sheets so you won’t constantly be refilling it.  It can print up to 15 pages per minute and comes with separate red, blue, yellow and black ink cartridges so you only replace the color you’re out of.  So if you need a printer, get out to Office Depot and pick one or get it online.  Here’s the link to their page:  http://bit.ly/TekChic0405

Look What’s Coming to Town?

imageNope, it’s not Santa on his sleigh, it’s this month’s updates from Microsoft.  Within the next 24 hours you’ll probably see the yellow shield (if you’re running Windows XP) or the blue icon (for Vista and Windows 7) down in your task tray.  Those icons means there are updates that need to be installed.  Click on the icon to update your computer.  Adobe will also be updating it’s Reader software with an IMPORTANT security update, so be sure you do it.  Whenever you see the brown Java icon you need to be sure to update that as well.  Most of the viruses I see these days get in because the Java on the computer wasn’t updated and the bad guys got in though an exposed security flaw.  Remember, you can patch it now or pay me later so don’t put it off.

Be Careful Who You’re “Friends” With

imageFox Business has an interesting article about how con artists are using social networking sites like Facebook to separate you from your money.  They “friend” someone, then get them to invest and make sure they get lots of money back – then get them to tell their friends, and they take all the friends money.  Good idea to be aware of this: http://fxn.ws/TekChic0404

Did a Computer Write This Article?

imageWell, no.  Not THIS article.  But a startup company in Illinois called Narrative Science is developing software that can take data and put it together in the form of an article that sounds like it was actually written by a human.  There’s an article in the New York Times that describes it further and even has a sample, it’s pretty impressive.  Here’s the link to the article: http://nyti.ms/TekChic0403
