Install Apps on Your Android Phone From Your Computer with NO Cables

imageA great feature of the new Android Market (http://market.android.com) is that when you log in from your computer (yes, even from a Mac) using your Gmail account, all you have to do to get the app of your choice onto your phone is click the “Install” button.  Because your phone is associated with your Gmail account, it knows which phone is your and pushed the app onto your phone without you having to touch it.  It works great, I just clicked “Install” for a battery saver app, it knows I have an EVO 4G and when I went to my phone a few minutes later, the app was already there.  Give it a try.  Go to the Market on the web, find an app you’d like to try and click on “Install”

Use Google to Plan Your Wedding

imageFirst there was Google, then came Gmail, then Google Docs, then Google Voice, Google Apps, and now…. Google Weddings.

That’s right, now Google is putting all the tools together to let you easily plan your wedding, and get tips from expert wedding planner Michelle Rago.  You can create a website for the event, modify and personalize photos to use as cards, document all the details and even have your own online photo album.  Google is also having a contest to win $25,000 toward your dream wedding – it’s worth taking a look at:  http://www.google.com/weddings

Tell a Story With Your Photos

imageGizmodo has a short but informative article about how to tell a story with photos.  Most of us have hundreds if not thousands of photos on our computers, and instead of just sending out or posting to friends and family our most recent vacation or of the recent snowfall, try letting your pictures tell the story.  Here’s the article: http://gizmo.do/TekChic0287

Will Watson be the Next Jeopardy Champion?

imageNo, I’m not talking about Sherlock Holmes’ assistant, I’m talking about Watson, the computer built by IBM to handle questions and answers (or better said answers and questions) on Jeopardy as fast as a human.  The Watson project started 4 years ago, and is able to “think” in a couple of seconds what would take your personal computer hours to do.  The show will air starting Monday.  Click here to read more from US News.

It’s Windows Update Time (and Adobe Too)

image

imageYesterday was the 2nd Tuesday of the month, that wonderful time when Microsoft published patches to its Windows operating systems.  But Microsoft wasn’t alone, as Adobe had 42 mostly critical updates to its Reader and Flash products – so be sure to allow those updates to happen to keep your system secure.  In case you didn’t know, you CAN get a virus from an Acrobat .pdf file or from a Flash movie, so don’t put it off.  When you see that notice in your taskbar tray, say OK

Attention Catholic iPhone Users

imageHey, what can I say – I don’t make this stuff up.  Being protestant I don’t know all the finer points within Catholicism, but apparently it has been approved somewhere within the Catholic church for an iPhone app to help people with their confessions.  The app is $1.99, and called simply “Confession”.  The app does not replace the church, as you still need to go to a priest for absolution.  Here’s the link to the New York Daily News article: http://nydn.us/TekChic0285

A couple of reverends helped design the app, I assume they are getting the $1.99.

Watch Your Favorite Super Bowl Ads Again…

Moving to the Verizon iPhone? Here Are Some Things You Need to Know.

image

Whether you’re a current iPhone user on AT&T and am ready to move to Verizon, or you have a different phone and have been waiting for your chance to finally get an iPhone, there are some things to take into consideration and prepare for.  Geek.com has an excellent article on what you need to do in order to transfer your contacts and the options when moving your phone number to the new phone.

So What IS an Android Phone Anyway?

image

For all you NON-Android phone users, you might not know or understand exactly what an Android phone is.  When some tells you they have an iPhone, you know it was made by Apple, and they have one of 4 phones, the original, the 3G, the 3GS or the current iPhone 4.  Apple introduced the first iPhone in 2007 and it revolutionized what people think a smartphone should be like.  It was by far ahead of anything currently on the market – no one was close!

Well, even before the iPhone even came out, in 2005 Google bought the company that created the Android operating system.  But they didn’t build a phone like Apple, rather, they turned it into an operating system that would be free for any phone manufacturer and carrier to use.  So when you buy an “Android” phone, it might be made by Samsung, HTC, Motorola or LG – and sold by Spring, T-Mobile, Verizon or AT&T.  You probably have seen the Verizon commercials for their version of the Android phone called simply the “Droid”.  And they now have the Droid Incredible, the Droid 2 and the Droid X, all with different features but based on the Android operating system.  Sprint”s number one Android phone is the HTC EVO 4G (my personal phone of choice)  and they have a new one called the EVO Shift 4G which is smaller with a slide-out keyboard.  T-Mobile and AT&T have their Android-based phones also.

So if you want to buy an iPhone, your decision is simple – there is only one and it’s made by Apple.  AT&T has had an exclusive for the last 4 years, but starting Feb. 3rd you can pre-order one from Verizon and actually get one one on February 10th.

If you want an Android phone, it’s a little more confusing – not so different from buying a Mac or buying a PC.  If you want a Mac, only one company makes them – Apple.   They have a few laptops and a couple of desktops and that’s it.  If you want a PC, you have a dozen or more companies that sell Windows-based computers in all kinds of different configurations, which can make it very difficult to tell which one is the right one to buy.

In many ways the Android operating system is better than the iPhone, it multi-tasks better and providers (other than AT&T) are happy to let you use the built-in GPS turn-by-turn directions that comes with Android, if you want to do that with your iPhone AT&T wants to charge you extra.  The Android operating system also lets you run “widgets” which are programs that actually run right there on your screen.  For example, on Android you can have it display your calendar right there on your screen without having to do a thing  AND tell you how much battery life you have left– on the iPhone you must OPEN the calendar app to see your calendar.  EVERYTHING on the iPhone is an app, you can tell the time and that’s about it.  With widgets you can in one look see your calendar, the weather forecast and your last voice-mail message without touching anything.

The iPhone is simpler, and for a lot of people that’s a good thing.  Many people don’t want to have to figure things out, and that is where Apple excels – they make it simple.  But if you’re willing to put in some effort to figure out how to get the most out of your phone, then Android is waiting for you.  Pick the carrier that has the best coverage in your area and then pick your phone – there will be several to choose from.

Now, I’m a geek and proudly admit it – and am glad to say I sold my iPhone 7 months ago to a client and now have an EVO 4G and the both of us are happy.  I think Android offers you more but requires more from you to make everything work.

Apple brings out a new iPhone once a year, there is a new Android phone coming out almost every month.  So before you buy the iPhone because “that’s the best phone” (according to what you’ve heard), ask about the Android phones your carrier has.  Android is a great operating system and may provide you with more  capabilities than even that iPhone can.

Browse the Android Market on the Web

For all of you Android phone owners (and there are a LOT of you, Android phones passed the iPhone as the best selling smartphone last month) you no longer have to hunt and peck through the less than great Android Market on your phone.  Google has made the Android Market available on the web at market.android.com.   Now it’s easy to find to find a particular type of app for your phone.  The great thing is that all the apps have their QR code right their so you can scan the code with your phone’s barcode reader and you’re right there ready to download.  What?  You don’t have a barcode reader on your Android phone?  OK, so here’s what you do… on your phone go to the Marketplace and click on the search icon (the magnifying glass) and search for “barcode scanner”.  That will reveal a lot of scanners.  I use the “Barcode Scanner” by ZXing Team.  It’s about the 5th on the list (on my phone) and is free.  Install it and then you’re ready to scan QR codes like the one at the end of this post that will take you (in this case) to my web site’s home page.  So go on, get the barcode scanner and start exploring all the great apps that are available in the Android Market.  Have fun!
